The Greek kind of looks like the English.

It is the first letter in the Greek alphabet. You may have heard of Jesus referred to as the "Alpha and Omega" as in Revelation 1:8. "Omega" is the last letter in the alphabet.

In David Black's "Learn to Read New Testament Greek" he lists that Alpha "fAther" is the long form and "bAt" is the short form.

There are differences of opinion on how to say the short and long "a" sound. David is a good scholar.
