Number

Three more things we need to learn before jumping into cases. The first is "number," something you have already learned, so this is just a review.

What is the difference between "book" and "books"?

Right! "Book" means there is one, and "books" means there are more than one. We usually add an "s" on the end of a word when there are more than one.

This is termed "number"

  1. When a word refers to one thing, we say its number is singular.
  2. When there are more than one, we say its number is plural.

When the noun changes its form depending on whether it is singular or plural, this is another example of inflection.
