All verbs have a subject. The subject is what does the action of the verb.

The subject can be contained in the verb. We have seen how ἐστιν means not just "is," but, "he is."

There can also be a word that is the subject of the verb.

  • αὐτός ἐστιν... means "He is..."
  • αὐτή ἐστιν ... means "She is..."

By supplying the actual subject, you can make it clear that the subject is a "he" or a "she."
